A Response by Dwijendra Senaratne to BBC report ''Sri Lanka war zone hospital shelling" Publish on 12/05/2009

If you say " The claims are impossible to verify" then how can you just take topic off a website and claim Sri Lankan Government forces have shelled a hospital just like that. The image that is created here is not very good. In 4 sq: Km do you reckon there are so many make shift hospitals. I think reporters should take more responsibility when they are publishing items rather than for personal gains or for revenge.(Just because channel 4 reporters got kicked out of the country).
I'm not stating that everything the Sri Lankan government do is good. But in given the situations I think their doing a pretty decent job. Most of the people who are shouting and protesting in the streets of London have not been to Sri Lanka forever or at least 20 to 15 years.
I have many friends who are Tamil's who grew up together and we don't have any issues or any problems and we get along together. It is only a very few element that is making a huge deal out of this. There are many Tamils in Sri lankan forces as well (If you didn't know).
It is Sad that people have to suffer but I’m just asking as responsible media institution why can't you guys put pressure on LTTE; asking them to release the civilians or lay down their weapons. If they do so there is no more suffering. This war is not against Tamils. It’s against Tigers. All I’m asking is, if your so much into publishing articles for every small mistake the Sri Lankan government forces do then why cant you all give an equal prominence and publish articles which describes LTTE and what they actually do and what they can do to help to stop the suffering of these innocent civilians.
Also I like to bring to your attention that since tigers are encircled in less the 6 Sq: Km and also knowing that the LTTE chief is in the area the army can just bomb the whole area. So why aren’t the army doing it? This is simply because the army takes responsible of its actions. (Or course USA or any other army will just bomb the whole area and wipe it out. Isn’t it the case with Afghanistan and Iraq?) This is very much like asking a person to write 5 good things that a person did right rather than criticizing 10 things that person did wrong. In conclusion there is hope to finish 30 years of suffering. Why can't you guys help that by understanding the situations and not just publishing articles without proper justification and give the wrong impression to the reader. Also it will be great if you guys could publish an article regarding the so called Weapons of Mass distructions that was believed to be in Iraq and do an analysis how many unnecessary deaths it brought going looking for it.

  1. I study in UK and I know how these media act. They do exaggerate blames on GOSL. Sometimes I wonder if they are LTTE. May be they are ashamed of loosing their power over this concern, like they used to have over world affairs. Because now, much expected submissiveness from a country like Sri Lanka is no longer visible. These media must understand the fact that as the legitimate power, GOSL has the right to fight against LTTE. After all, this is not a war against the Tamils but against terrorism. I'm sure that no Tamil (who has been in the conflict zone, of course) would want to see this war continuing.
This international attention reveals us another side of LTTE though, i.e., how well it was organized. When LTTE get hit, people all around the world start crying, including so called responsible international media. Its a pretty shame though.

  2. Although my comment is just too late, i'm gonna say it anyways.
    Well Said Senaratne.
Although LTTE is no more, BBC has NOT stopped these kind of reports. What a shame...
